Thoughts from some Brian Wilson fans about Landy and Brian's relationship, as well as the song 'I Sleep Alone'. From the fan-made Beach Boys / Brian Wilson forum: Smiley Smile
"I don't think that Brian and Landy were ever sexually involved, at least as far as Brian knows. As doped up as Landy had him, though, one wonders..."
"I'd never heard the song "I Sleep Alone" until it was posted recently. What was the thinking behind this song? Was it designed to be covered by a female artist, and if so, who,and if not, WTF? Actually, a lot of SI lyrics make me wonder. About what, I'd rather not say. It's just weird stuff, and I don't know why Brian's people were so anxious to take Gene Landy and Alex Morgan's name off the songs, because they're pretty egregious, some of them, lyrically speaking. I also wonder why they'd want Brian to relive that part of his life by redoing some of the songs for GIOMH."
"I can see why people would think that about Landy. The way he used to go on talk shows speaking of being Brian's "life partner," the matching tuxedos (someone posted a picture of the two of them wearing silver highlights in various areas of their tuxes), the similar aloha shirts, the matching Corvettes. It's interesting that Gene seemed to wanted to create that public impression, even if it was an illusion, because it probably was another element to control his client. He was a piece of work, and "Sweet Insanity" is another example of his sick control."
♫ I Sleep Alone ♫
Written by Brian Wilson
He brings me tulips, jewels for my ears
Laughs at my sly wit and kisses my tears
Praises my beauty, calls me his own
Yet night after night I sleep all alone
I sleep alone, dream alone and I weep alone
I sleep alone, 'cause his wife is our chaperone
I sleep alone, dream alone and I weep alone
It's really hard when your man's not your own
He's got a dear wife, she keeps his kids
She rules his home life and cooks, cleans and mends
I am his wild life, his love on loan
Woah never a housewife, I sleep alone
It's a rough life, it's a cold life when you're on your own
And your only bed companion's a silent telephone
I choose my own way, plan my own life
Always the lover, I'm never a wife
No wedding veil, no bride's bouquet
No marriage vows, no dues to pay
I sleep alone, dream alone and I weep alone
I sleep alone, 'cause his wife is our chaperone
I sleep alone, dream alone and I weep alone
It's really hard when your man's not your own
He brings me tulips, jewels for my ears
It's really hard when your man's not your own
This song was supposed to be used for a tv pilot about a mistress, with a woman doing the vocal. The pilot was never made, or was shelved. I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of Landy, but the skeleton isn't in this particular closet. If you look at it in that context, this is a pretty darn good tune and it's a shame it was never used.
